Program Assistant (part-time) - Library Services
SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Vice President for Library Services, the Program Assistant provides administrative support to the Vice President and assists the Vice President and all Library Services departments with the implementation of Library Services activities and projects.

Program Assistant (part- time) - D’Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian History
SUMMARY: Reporting to the Director of the D’Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian History, the Program Assistant coordinates the Center’s Newberry Consortium for American Indian Studies programs, academic seminars, and is responsible for the general reception, communications, and clerical support for the research center.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist in management and operation of Center programs, which include workshops, seminars, lectures, conferences, and digital and print publication projects. Responsibilities and tasks will include coordinating and distributing publicity for all Center programs; assisting with program-related public relations; maintaining program records; overseeing program logistics, including housing arrangements and in-building arrangements; maintaining databases; answering telephones and providing information to the public; processing travel reimbursement requests; maintaining computerized financial records; handling photocopying, filing, errands, and general clerical work for the office; maintaining the Center’s Web pages; handling electronic and paper correspondence; contributing to Center’s ongoing digital and print publication projects; and all other tasks or activities needed for the achievement of departmental goals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· B.A. in humanities with training in anthropology, American history, literature, or related disciplines required, familiarity with American Indian histories strongly preferred.
· Experience working with members of the Chicago Indian community and/or other Indian communities in the United States preferred.
· Relevant administrative experience required; pleasant personal and telephone manner, good communication skills and careful attention to detail required; word processing and data entry skills required;
· Proficient computer skills in word processing and data entry required and the ability to learn new software as needed; familiarity with Excel, Access, Quark, and Photoshop preferred;
· Good research and interpersonal communications skills.
· Ability to work in a fast paced environment and handle multiple tasks at various levels of completion at one time.
· Physical strength and mobility required with the ability to lift 20 pounds.
· Some experience with audio/podcast and video editing preferred.
SCHEDULE: Part-time, 17 hrs/week -Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday availability preferred. Non-exempt
A Newberry Library internship offers a challenging supplement to the educational experience of undergraduate and graduate students interested in library science, history and the humanities. Internships may last from one month to one year requiring an average of seven to twenty flexible hours per week. Although these opportunities are unpaid (unless stated otherwise), many interns will earn academic credit for their Newberry experience. Internship applications are accepted year-round. DEPARTMENT: Reader Services
SUMMARY: Various opportunities are available for students seeking experience in a research library. The Library Intern will be assigned to projects in different areas of specialization as described below.
QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of college with strong interest in the humanities preferred. Library work experience desirable. Ability to maintain close attention to detail.
SALARY:
These internships are unpaid. Course credit may be available.
LOCAL AND FAMILY HISTORY INTERN:
Working with the Curator of Local and Family History, interns will gain experience in collection development, reference, and outreach by checking Newberry holdings against dealer/publisher catalogs and published bibliographies, answering reference correspondence, and creating pathfinders. LOCAL AND FAMILY HISTORY POLISH-LANGUAGE PROJECT INTERN:
Working with the Curator of Local and Family History, interns help arrange and describe Polish-language materials and assist in other historical reference work. Requires reading knowledge of Polish. MAPS INTERN:
Volunteers and interns will work with the Library's collection of antiquarian maps to create original records for the Newberry Library Cartographic Catalog (NLCC). Interest in history, geography and maps, and familiarity with spreadsheet or bibliographic programs desirable but not neccessary. PHOTODUPLICATION INTERN:
Interns, supervised by the Photoduplication Manager, will work closely with the library's photographer to produce and catalog copy-stand photography of images in the Newberry's collections. Some knowledge of photographic and darkroom techniques desirable but not required. DEPARTMENT: Newberry Consort
SUMMARY: The Newberry Consort intern will work closely with both the manager and the director of the Consort to administer concert program and publicity activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Consort intern will work under the supervision of the Consort Manager. The major duties entail the preparation and production of concert programs; preparation and distribution of publicity materials; box office administration and ushering at concerts; liaison with the Consort's two academic residencies - University of Chicago and Northwestern.
QUALIFICATIONS: Excellent communication and organization skills; attention to detail, initiative, and ability to work independently required; an interest in arts management is desired; some knowledge of music theory, practice, and history preferred; familiarity with Latin, French, and Italian is beneficial.
SCHEDULE: Up to 5 flexible hours per week with most work occurring in the two weeks prior to concert dates. Expected to be available for approximately four concert evenings per year (generally Fridays and Saturdays).
SALARY: This internship is unpaid. Course credit may be available. Free tickets to Newberry Consort performances for intern and a guest are available throughout the season.

DEPARTMENT: Marketing and Communications
RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Graphic Designer, the graphic design intern will assist in producing a variety of promotional materials, including postcards, newsletters, posters, brochures, invitations, and other communication pieces related to the promotion and positioning of the Library, in addition to any other tasks or activities required for achievement of departmental goals. The graphic design intern can expect to complete the internship with an improved working knowledge of image correction in Photoshop; managing multi-page publications in InDesign; working with printers and other vendors on small- to medium-scale projects; and image research with access to one of the world's leading collections in the humanities and the history of Western Europe and the Americas.
QUALIFICATIONS:
SCHEDULE: Part-time, 10 hours/week, Monday through Friday. Schedule is somewhat flexible.
SALARY: Unpaid internship, course credit may be available at college's discretion. $100/month travel stipend.

DEPARTMENT: Marketing
SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Public Relations and Communications and the Associate Director of Development Events, the intern will assist with public relations and event coordination. The student will perform various duties to promote and coordinate all of our summer events and programs, including the Library's 23rd Annual Book Fair. Worker must be flexible, friendly and professional.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in progress. Ability to work independently; strong written and verbal communication skills; keen eye for detail.
SCHEDULE: 10-15 hours a week, May - August, could be extended. Some hours may be worked from home.
SALARY: This is a credit / experience internship and is unpaid.
