Welcome to the Newberry Library's Employment Opportunities page. Positions for which the Newberry Library is currently accepting applications are listed below.  Positions will remain posted until filled or until a sufficient pool of qualified candidates has been established.

Program Assistant

 DEPARTMENTS:                Scholarly and Undergraduate Programs; Public Programs

 SUMMARY:  Under the supervision of the Director of Public Programs, the Program Assistant is responsible for administrative, communications, and reception support for the departments of Scholarly and Undergraduate Programs and Public Programs.  The Department of Scholarly and Undergraduate Programs administers fellowships, undergraduate programs and other scholarly programs, and prepares grant proposals.  The Department of Public Programs is responsible for adult education Seminars, exhibitions, public programs and events for more than 20,000 people annually. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:  As part of the program assistant staff, process class registrations for the Seminars program; assist with exhibitions and public programs, fellowships, scholars-in-residence, and undergraduate programs.  Prepare orientation and administrative paperwork for incoming scholars and students; assist with coordinating ongoing seminars and colloquia; assist with publicity for public and academic programs; welcome, orient, and provide basic clerical and technical support for visiting scholars, instructors, and students.  Assist in processing of fellowship applications; help organize fellowships review and other meetings.  Edit and maintain web pages; maintain and utilize databases for information retrieval and statistics.  Work with other Program Assistants to coordinate projects and events; respond to inquiries about programs via email and telephone; handle photocopying, filing, errands, proofreading and occasional research tasks; co-supervise student workers and volunteers; all other tasks or activities needed for the achievement of departmental goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor's degree, with a humanities background, or equivalent experience required.  Excellent customer service skills required, as are strong writing and editing skills.  Candidate must also demonstrate strong office management skills; accuracy; ability to organize and prioritize work; ability to handle large amounts of detailed and confidential information; initiative; and the ability to work independently.  General competency with office, computer and A/V equipment strongly preferred. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Access) required; familiarity with Adobe software and HTML and web page design preferred (or ability to learn new applications quickly).

SCHEDULE: Full time, 35 hours/week; usually Tuesdays through Saturdays (with some Monday through Friday weeks.) Occasional evening hours required for seminar registration periods, public programs, and special events. Non-exempt.

           General Internship Information

A Newberry Library internship offers a challenging supplement to the educational experience of undergraduate and graduate students interested in library science, history and the humanities. Internships may last from one month to one year requiring an average of seven to twenty flexible hours per week. Although these opportunities are unpaid (unless stated otherwise), many interns will earn academic credit for their Newberry experience. Internship applications are accepted year-round.  LIBRARY INTERNSHIPS

DEPARTMENT: Reader Services

SUMMARY: The following opportunities are available for students seeking experience in a research library. The Library Intern will be assigned to projects in different areas of specialization as described below.

 QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of college with strong interest in the humanities preferred. Library work experience desirable. Ability to maintain close attention to detail.

SALARY:
These internships are unpaid. Course credit may be available.

GENEALOGY and LOCAL HISTORY  INTERN

Working with the Curator of Genealogy and Local History, interns will gain experience in collection development, reference, and outreach by checking Newberry holdings against dealer/publisher catalogs and published bibliographies, answering reference correspondence, and creating pathfinders. GENEALOGY and LOCAL HISTORY  POLISH-LANGUAGE PROJECT INTERN

Working with the Curator of Genealogy and Local History, interns help arrange and describe Polish-language materials and assist in other historical reference work. Requires reading knowledge of Polish.  MAPS INTERN

Volunteers and interns will work with the Library's collection of antiquarian maps to create original records for the Newberry Library Cartographic Catalog (NLCC). Interest in history, geography and maps, and familiarity with spreadsheet or bibliographic programs desirable but not neccessary.  PHOTODUPLICATION INTERN

Interns, supervised by the Photoduplication Manager, will work closely with the library's photographer to produce and catalog copy-stand photography of images in the Newberry's collections. Some knowledge of photographic and darkroom techniques desirable but not required.   GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERNSHIP

DEPARTMENT: Marketing and Communications

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Graphic Designer, the graphic design intern will assist in producing a variety of promotional materials, including postcards, newsletters, posters, brochures, invitations, and other communication pieces related to the promotion and positioning of the Library, in addition to any other tasks or activities required for achievement of departmental goals. The graphic design intern can expect to complete the internship with an improved working knowledge of image correction in Photoshop; managing multi-page publications in InDesign; working with printers and other vendors on small- to medium-scale projects; and image research with access to one of the world's leading collections in the humanities and the history of Western Europe and the Americas.

QUALIFICATIONS:

SCHEDULE: Part-time, 10 hours/week, Monday through Friday. Schedule is somewhat flexible.

SALARY: Unpaid internship, course credit may be available at college's discretion. $100/month travel stipend.

 PUBLIC RELATIONS/EVENTS INTERN

DEPARTMENT: Marketing

SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Public Relations and Communications and the Associate Director of Development Events, the intern will assist with public relations and event coordination. The student will perform various duties to promote and coordinate all of our summer events and programs, including the Library's 23rd Annual Book Fair. Worker must be flexible, friendly and professional.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in progress. Ability to work independently; strong written and verbal communication skills; keen eye for detail.

SCHEDULE: 10-15 hours a week, May - August, could be extended. Some hours may be worked from home.

SALARY: This is a credit / experience internship and is unpaid.
