Janet Fairbank (1903-1947), a member of the culturally-prominent Fairbank Family of Chicago, trained as an opera singer and performed in Europe and in North America in the 1930s and 1940s. In 1948 her collection of working music was donated to the Newberry.
This collection of sheet music and music anthologies, centered in American 20th-century works and emphasizing the works of women composers, reflects Fairbank’s interests. Though the collection remains uncataloged, an inventory is available as a PDF file. For additional information on Fairbank’s musical career, see her scrapbook, which is also available at the Newberry.
