Completed applications should be submitted to the Smith Center at the Newberry Library, and should be postmarked no later than March 1, 2016. Successful applicants will be notified of their selection on Thursday, March 31, 2016 and will have until Wednesday, April 7 to accept or decline the offer.
Before applying, please read the full Seminar Description and the NEH Application Information and Instructions. Applicants are responsible for reading these materials prior to submitting an application.
Applicants are asked to complete an online Application Cover Sheet located on the NEH’s website. Please mail hard copies of all other required materials to the Smith Center at The Newberry Library (address below).
The most important part of the application is the essay of no more than four double-spaced pages. This essay should include your reasons for applying to the seminar; your relevant personal and academic information; your qualifications to do the work of the seminar and to make a contribution to it; a description of your proposed independent research project; and the relation of study to your teaching. Please also include contact information for two professional references. Two letters of reference are recommended, though not required.
A complete application consists of three copies of the following collated items:
- completed application cover sheet
- application essay
- detailed résumé, curriculum vitae, or brief biography with contact information for two professional references
- two letters of reference (optional, though recommended)
