Summer Institute for Teachers in Tribal Colleges 2004:

Teaching American Indian Sovereignty

MAY 31-JUNE 11, 2004

Director: David E. Wilkins (Lumbee)

In recognition of the central role tribal colleges play in the process of nation-building, The Newberry Library’s D’Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian History welcomes applications for its 2004 Summer Institute for Teachers in Tribal Colleges. The two-week institute will enable participants to study Indian sovereignty under the direction of Professor David E. Wilkins, one of the nation’s leading specialists in the field. His books include American Indian Politics and the American Political System, American Indian Sovereignty and the U.S. Supreme Court, Uneven Ground: American Indian Sovereignty and Federal Law (with Tsianina Lomawaima), and Tribes, Treaties & Constitutional Tribulations (with Vine Deloria, Jr.).

Institute participants will meet four mornings each week to discuss a common set of readings. Additionally, the afternoons from Monday to Thursday and all of both Fridays will be reserved for independent research in The Newberry Library’s internationally-renowned manuscript collections. This work, in turn, will lead to the development of document-based lesson plans, bibliographies, syllabi, and other curricular material relating to the history, culture, and experience of Indian people. Support for the photographic or digital reproduction of materials will be provided to the participants so that these documents can be returned to their communities and deposited in their home institutions’ libraries.

Eligibility: The summer institute is open to faculty, staff, and research fellows affiliated with tribal colleges. The twelve participants that are selected will receive $1,500 each for housing and per diem, and will be reimbursed up to $1,000 for travel expenses to and from The Newberry Library. Each will also receive a book and photocopying allowance.

The institute is sponsored by the Lannan Foundation, The Newberry Library, and the McNickle Center Visiting Committee.
