The Newberry Library's D'Arcy McNickle Center is please to host two two-week Lannan summer institutes for tribal college faculty, research fellows, and staff. Helen Roy (Wikwemikong Odawa) will direct the first institute, "Teaching American Indian Languages and Language Instruction," between June 6th and June 17th, 2005. Amanda Cobb (Chickasaw) will direct the institute, "Teaching American Indian Education," between August 1st and August 12th, 2005. Roy and Cobb, professors at Michigan State University and the University of New Mexico, respectively, are recognized as some of the top specialists in their fields.
The summer institutes are open to faculty, staff, and research fellows affiliated with tribal colleges. The twelve participants that are selected for each of the two 2005 summer institutes will be provided with housing in a hotel near the library, a $500 stipend, and reimbursement for travel expenses to and from Chicago. The participants will engage pedagogical issues surrounding language instruction and American Indian education, depending on which institute they attend. The participants will also have the opportunity to develop curriculum materials, syllabi, bibliographies, and to conduct their own research at the Newberry Library.
Institute participants will meet four mornings each week to discuss a common set of readings. Additionally, the afternoons from Monday to Thursday and all of both Fridays will be reserved for independent research in The Newberry Library’s internationally-renowned manuscript collections. This work, in turn, will lead to the development of document-based lesson plans, bibliographies, syllabi, and other curricular material relating to the history, culture, and experience of Indian people. Support for the photographic or digital reproduction of materials will be provided to the participants so that these documents can be returned to their communities and deposited in their home institutions’ libraries.
Eligibility: The summer institute is open to faculty, staff, and research fellows affiliated with tribal colleges. The twelve participants that are selected will receive $1,500 each for housing and per diem, and will be reimbursed up to $1,000 for travel expenses to and from The Newberry Library. Each will also receive a book and photocopying allowance.
