Bicentennial Celebration of President Lincoln Day in Chicago
Saturday, October, 10, 2009

CHICAGO, October 8, 2009 – Celebrate “Bicentennial Celebration of President Lincoln Day in Chicago” at the Newberry Library on Saturday, October 10 by attending the opening of With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition. View a treasure trove of priceless Lincoln artifacts from the Library of Congress’s extensive collections. Among them are rarely seen period letters, documents, photographs and political cartoons.

Richard M. Daley, mayor of the City of Chicago, proclaimed October 10, 2009 to be “Bicentennial Celebration of President Lincoln Day in Chicago” in honor of the Newberry Library’s exhibition celebrating Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday. In the Proclamation he noted that Chicago played a pivotal role in Lincoln’s career and that Lincoln’s determination to teach himself to read, leading him to a successful career as a lawyer, politician and to the highest office in the land, is a lesson to us all.

Read the Proclamation online at http://www.newberry.org/media/LincolnBiProc09.pdf.

Join the Newberry on Saturday, October 10 to attend the opening lecture at 11 am, Abraham Lincoln and the Power of Words. Douglas L. Wilson, the George A. Lawrence Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at Knox College and co-director of the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College will lecture on how Lincoln used words—in his public speeches, private correspondence, jokes, and stories—to persuade, disarm, criticize, comfort, inspire, and lead a nation. Admission is free. No reservation is required.

With Malice Toward None, a Library of Congress exhibition, charts Lincoln’s growth from prairie lawyer to preeminent statesman and addresses the monumental issues he faced, including slavery and race, the dissolution of the Union, and the Civil War. By placing Lincoln’s words in a historical context, the exhibition will give visitors a deeper understanding of how remarkable Lincoln’s decisions were for their time and why his words continue to resonate today. Interactive computer stations and video presentations will offer deeper access to these treasures and augment the exhibition, allowing visitors to virtually explore details up close and hear insights from those touched by Lincoln’s words, including U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, and U.S. Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, among others.

With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition and its national tour are made possible by the generous support of Union Pacific Corporation. The Newberry installation of this exhibition is sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Gerald F. Fitzgerald, Sr.
