Newberry Library presents the Chicago Calligraphy Collective's 22nd Annual Juried Exhibition

May 28 - July 11, 2008

CHICAGO (May 1, 2008) - Join the Newberry from May 28 through July 11 as it features new work by current Chicago Calligraphy Collective members. Exploration 2008, the 22nd annual juried exhibition, includes handmade artist books and broadsides, plus three-dimensional works in various media and styles, from classical to contemporary. This year's show will display 56 objects of wide range that include text from Shakespeare, the Bible, Bob Dylan, Aristotle, Kate Chopin, Langston Hughes, and original artists' texts.

The Newberry holds the Chicago Calligraphy Collective's archives, which include newsletters, posters, correspondence, and invitations and other ephemera, and is open to for research. Annually, the Library uses its Purchase Award to acquire one exhibited piece from the Collective to strengthen the calligraphy holdings of the Library's own distinguished John M. Wing Foundation for the History of Printing. Along with the finished calligraphy piece, the Newberry also collects and preserves the artist's drafts, notes, and sketches that were part of developing the final object.

"Modern calligraphy is all about the processes of creation," says Paul F. Gehl, Custodian of the Newberry's John M. Wing Foundation for the History of Printing. "The Newberry is one of the best places to see not only the finest finished products but also sketches, drawings, and trials-the documents of process-by calligraphers of all periods."

"The CCC is proud to partner with the Newberry Library for our 22nd annual juried exhibit," said Lisa Kivland, president of the Chicago Calligraphy Collective. "This exhibit features the finest of our membership's art, while exposing the many Newberry Library visitors to the dynamic calligraphic scene that has always been active in Chicago."

Join the Newberry and the CCC for the Opening Reception and Presentation of the Purchase Award on Saturday, June 7, at 1 pm when Paul F. Gehl announces the 2008 winner. Tom Greensfelder keynotes. Admission is free.
