Memorial Day Celebrations

Memorial Day Service - Galesburg Cemetery

“Decoration Day”, as it was first known, began in 1868 to commemorate the lives of the soldiers who died in the Civl War. It has since been expanded to honor all the brave men and women who have died serving our country.

As we prepare our own Memorial Day celebrations it’s also interesting to look back at the way we have celebrated this holiday in the past. The Newberry’s “Daily Life Along the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad“digital collection contains several images, such as this one, of 1948 Memorial Day celebrations in Galesburg, Illinois.
