Native American Heritage Month

In 1990, President George H. W. Bush approved a resolution designating November “National American Indian Heritage Month.” To honor this rich Native heritage, the Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and many other institutions are planning special celebrations and events. In addition to the national events, Chicago and many other communities are sponsoring a variety of local events.

The Newberry holds one of the strongest collections on American Indians in the world, with an excess of 130,000 volumes, over one million manuscript pages, 2,000 maps, 500 atlases, 11,000 photographs, and 3,500 drawings and paintings on the subject. A new database (only available within the library), American Indian Histories and Cultures, is a deep and wide ranging selection of visual and textual resources from this collection.
