A Morning with Dr. David McDonald, CG
9:30 am - 12:45 pm

Join us for a morning with Dr. David McDonald, CG. Dave has nearly 40 years’ genealogical research experience and has more than 30 years’ experience as a lecturer and teacher in the field. Dave’s formative years were spent in Buffalo Grove and he has been a frequent user of the Newberry’s collections since 1979. His research interests include migration to, through, and within the United States, and in the records of churches and their utility for genealogical research. A trustee and immediate past president of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, he has also served as a Director of the National Genealogical Society. Dave lives near Madison, Wisconsin, where he serves as a pastor in the United Church of Christ. With his wife, Dr. Jennet Shepherd, an optometrist, he has three adult children. Their household serves two cats and an aging basset hound.

The morning will start at 9:30 am with a brief tour and orientation to the Newberry’s genealogy section for those who’ve not been here before. Then, at 10 am, Dave will present two talks:

Illinois Migration Patterns - Illinois Migration Patterns reviews paths into the state in the antebellum period and considers cultural and attitudinal mindsets that define Chicago and “Downstate” as something other than a political perspective. Where did the people who made up Mr. Lincoln’s Illinois come from?

Lutherpalians and Presbygationalists - Lutherpalians and Presbygationalists looks at how American Protestants often moved between denominations as they moved across the country. Further, discussion of cultural clues which may offer insight into where or what type of church your forebears attended, and how to access church records that may exist if Grandma’s church has closed.

This session is free and open to the public. No reservations are required.
