Searching a library catalog for newspapers can be tricky. To make it easier to find newspapers at the Newberry, the Newspaper Collection Guide allows you to browse our holdings geographically and then chronologically for each location. It includes newspapers in multiple formats, including print, microform, and digital. As with most newspaper collections, titles and coverage vary from location to location. Here are a few interesting titles:
- Virginia Gazette (Williamsburg, VA) for 1767-1774
- LaPlata Miner (Silverton, CO) for 1879 - 1885 (scattered issues missing)
- Boston (MA) Evening Transcript for 1838 - 1865
- Los Angeles Socialist for 1902 - 1904
Coverage for Chicago includes a large number of German language papers.
In addition to the print and microform papers, the library also has subscriptions to several digital resources. Among them are the ProQuest Historical Newspapers: Chicago Tribune (1849 - 1989) and The New York Times (1851-2009). A detailed reference guide lists these and other electronic resources available within the library. The guide also contains published bibliographies and histories which may help you determine what titles were being published in the location and time period you are researching.
