October is Family History Month

It Didn’t All Go Up in Flames: Exploring Pre-Fire Chicago at the Newberry.
A 4-week seminar exploring Chicago history and the Newberry’s gold mine of pre-Fire treasures. Register soon - only 5 seats left!

October 6th
Local and Family History Orientation (free)
This free orientation will introduce novices to the basics of research in an informal setting. After the orientation, visitors are encouraged to stay and begin their research. Assistance will be available at the reference desk. No reservations are necessary.

October 13th
Genealogy Workshop: High Tech - Low Tech: Old-fashioned Genealogy Meets the 21st Century (free)
The genealogical fundamentals of evidence, analysis and documentation don’t change whether you’re using online tools or not. Join Marsha Peterson-Maass, Matt Rutherford and Thomas MacEntee for a free full-day workshop discussing these low tech fundamentals plus ways to use high tech online tools to make your research easier. Beginning Genealogy: A Crash Course
The Newberry has one of the strongest genealogy research collections in the nation. If you have considered tracing your family’s history in America, this one-session course will show you where to begin.  Only 4 seats left!

DAR Look-ups at the Newberry (free)
10 am - 4 pm
Christina Bannon, Registrar of the Chicago Chapter of the DAR, will be on hand at the Newberry to provide lookups in the DAR’s database and to offer advice on the application process. General Reading Room (second floor). No registration required.
