Tour leader: Rachel Bohlmann, The Newberry Library
The first and second generations of women social workers laid the groundwork for social security, early childhood education, public health and welfare programs, and other social programs we've come to take for granted. On this bus tour we will visit three Chicago neighborhoods-the near northwest side, the southwest side, and the south side-with tops at Jane Addams' Hull House and Harriet Vittum's Northwestern University Settlement Association. Commemorate women's history month and experience the diversity and breadth of settlement reform, which transformed not only Chicago, but the very fabric of American society.
Boarding at 12:45 pm from the front steps of the Library, the bus will depart promptly at 1 pm and return to the Newberry at 5 pm. Tickets are $45/$40 for Associates of the Newberry Library. Lunch is not included. The tour will not run with fewer than 25 registrants, and full refunds will be given if the tour is cancelled. If a participant cancels, 50% of the registration fee will be refunded up to two weeks in advance of the tour, after which no refund can be given.
To register, send a check payable to the Newberry Library to Newberry Library Public Programs, 60 West Walton Street, Chicago, IL 60610, Attention: Settlement Bus Tour, or telephone (312) 255-3700.
