Directed by Armando Petrucci and Franca Petrucci Nardelli
July 18 - August 12, 2005
Under the tutelage of Drs. Armando Petrucci and Franca Nardelli, participants in this institute will receive intensive training in the accurate reading and transcription of late medieval and early Renaissance Italian vernacular texts. Although the major emphasis of the institute is on paleographical skills, codicological techniques and analytic bibliography, the history of scripts, within the larger literary, intellectual and social contexts of Italy will be considered.
This institute will enroll 15 participants. First consideration will be given to advanced graduate students and junior faculty at U.S. colleges and universities, but applications will also be accepted from professional staff of U.S. libraries and museums, and from qualified independent scholars. Advanced language skills are required. The course will be conducted in Italian. Each participant will receive a stipend of $1,800 to help defray the costs of housing and travel. Additionally, the Medieval Academy's Committee on Centers and Regional Associates (CARA) will offer one $660.00 stipend to assist a graduate student with the cost of housing and/or research expenses while attending the 2005 Italian Paleography institute. (Only students who are members of the Medieval Academy will be eligible.)
