The Folger Institute/Newberry Library

Center for Renaissance Studies Reciprocity Agreement

The Center for Renaissance Studies collaborates with the Folger Institute in Washington, DC, itself a consortium of 42 institutions. Like the Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies, the Folger Institute offers programs for advanced study that are sponsored by a major independent research library and a consortium of member universities. Through the continuing reciprocity agreement between the Folger Institute and the Center for Renaissance Studies, faculty members and graduate students from the two consortia are welcome to participate in programs at both libraries, and associated program fees are waived unless otherwise specified.

For members of the Newberry Center for Renaissance Studies Consortium

Members of the Newberry Consortium must apply to the Folger for admission to Folger programs by the established deadlines. They also need to apply to the executive committee member at their Consortium institution for Newberry funding. Requirements, procedures, and deadlines for such applications are determined by individual member institutions. Depending on the school, grants may be available to conduct independent research at the Folger as well.

For members of the Folger Consortium

Those affiliated with the Folger must apply to the Newberry for admission to Newberry programs and to the Folger for funding. Folger Consortium policies are as follows:

  1. Newberry programs eligible for Folger Institute funding include semester-length seminars, weekend seminars, skills courses, workshops, and scholarly conferences. Preference is given to applicants for Newberry summer institutes in archival sciences. Grants-in-aid are not available for independently conducted research trips, fellowships, occasional lectures, and stipends or honoraria for invited speakers. If in doubt, please consult with your faculty representative or the Folger Institute staff.
  2. To apply for funding from the Folger Institute the relevant application deadlines must be met: the June deadline for fall programs and the September deadline for spring programs. Applicants must submit an application form signed by their campus representative. Requests for funding should follow the Institute's grant-in-aid guidelines. Applicants should describe the ways participation in the program sponsored by the Newberry is important to their scholarly work.
  3. Normal eligibility rules for consortium funding apply: all applicants must be graduate students or faculty members affiliated with member colleges and universities.
