Funds are available for faculty members and graduate students at Consortium institutions to participate in Center for Renaissance Studies programs or to conduct research on medieval, Renaissance, or early modern topics at the Newberry Library. Recipients of these funds may include the award on their curriculum vitae as a “Newberry Renaissance Consortium Grant.”
Funds may also be available for programs and research at the Folger Institute in Washington, DC (see the link here for more information). These awards may be listed on CVs as a “Newberry Renaissance Consortium Grant for seminar participation/research at the Folger Institute.”
Participants traveling to the Newberry or the Folger from Consortium schools should check with their Consortium faculty representative in advance for information about the availability of funds. Each member institution sets its own policies and requirements.
Two types of grants are available:
To receive reimbursement for travel, lodging, meals, and other expenses:
Often when faculty members or graduate students plan an extended trip to the Newberry or Folger, the Consortium committee at their institution awards them a stipend of a set amount, which they usually receive in advance.
To award such a stipend, the Consortium faculty representative should send a letter or e-mail authorizing the grant to the Center for Renaissance Studies, including the following information: the amount of the stipend and the recipient’s name, address, and social security number. The Center can either mail a check to the recipient or hold it at the Center until the recipient arrives.
