Founded in 1887 and dedicated to the collection of primary sources and to research and education in the humanities, the Newberry Library is one of America's leading independent research libraries. Its collections, strongest in the cultures of Europe and the Americas from the Late Middle Ages to the mid-twentieth century, span 1.5 million volumes, 5 million manuscript pages, and over 500,000 maps. §§§ The Division of Research and Education at the Newberry Library is comprised of four research centers--the Scholl Center for American History and Culture, the Center for Renaissance Studies, the D'Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian History, and the Smith Center for Cartography--and draws scholars from across the United states and around the world. The programs described on this page are designed for faculty members, graduate students, and independent scholars interested in the Library's collections and its thriving intellectual community. |
