Newberry Library Housing List for Fellows

These listings give the descriptions provided to us by the hotel or apartment in question. Please call to confirm that rates are current. Fellows have stayed without problems at all these locations. While they of course vary in price, size, and amenities, you can expect that all will be clean, pleasant, provide good service, and all are located in safe areas. Feel free to contact Diane Dillon 312-255-3662 or dillond@newberry.org, if you would like further information. While I cannot visit apartments or negotiate with hotels or landlords for you, I would be happy to talk to you about housing options. Foreign fellows are sometimes asked by landlords for a letter from the Newberry stating that they are here on fellowship; I am happy to provide such letters on request.

HOTELS

While we have negotiated lower rates with most of the hotels on this list (tell them that you're with the Newberry when you call), I recommend that you also check discount web hotel brokers like expedia.com, orbitz.com, travelocity.com, and hotwire.com. Their discounts will be greater in many cases than our negotiated rates, though availability may be limited.

ONLINE APARTMENT FINDERS

When searching for apartments online, it may help you to know thatour neighborhood is known variously as "River North," "Streeterville,"or "Gold Coast." Like all neighborhood designations in Chicago, theborders of these tend to shift depending on who you're talking to, butplaces listed in these neighborhoods will be within walking distance ofthe Newberry. Here is a list of all the neighborhoods in Chicago withtheir "real estate" as well as official names: http://www.dreamtown.com/services/chicago-neighborhood-map.htm

Craig's list (chicago.craigslist.com)has a constantly changing list of sublets, exchanges, and rentals. There are also other websites with more selective lists ofrooms/apartments to sublet for shorter periods. Here are a couple ofpromising ones: http://rentalo.com/l/us/il/Chicago; http://www.rentmyroom.homestead.com/Homepage.html. One fellow highly recommends checking out www.rent.com and http://www.apartmentratings.com/. You can enter your dates and the neighborhood, and it will spit outlists of available apartments in the area, arranged by price, with agood level of detail. Another fellow recommended www.sublet.com, which has a fee, but apparently a good range of apartments.

www.sabbaticalhomes.com has listings of sublet, exchange, and house-sitting opportunities, usually close to the University of Chicago or Northwestern, but alsoelsewhere in Chicago. Usually listings are for six months or longer. There are many home exchange and house-sitting sites, though they maynot match academic schedules; try your own google search. Also try:
