Special Awards and Fellowships

- Newberry Library/École Nationale des Chartes Exchange Fellowship Application deadline: January 10, 2011
This fellowship provides a monthly stipend and free tuition for an American or Canadian graduate student to study at the École Nationale des Chartes in Paris for a period of three months during 2010-11. The École des Chartes is the oldest institution in Europe specializing in the archival sciences, including paleography, bibliography, textual editing, and the history of the book. Preference will be given to students attending institutions that are members of the Center for Renaissance Studies Consortium. Applications are especially encouraged from students who are in the early stages of preparing their dissertations.
- Newberry Library/British Academy Fellowship for Study in Great Britain Application deadline: January 10, 2011 In cooperation with the British Academy, the Newberry Library offers an exchange fellowship for up to three months' study in Great Britain in any field in which the Newberry's collections are strong. This post-doctoral award pays £1350 per month; the Fellow's home institution is expected to continue to pay his or her salary. The Awards Committee gives preference to readers and staff of the Newberry and to scholars who have previously used the Library.
- Lawrence Lipking Fellowship at the Newberry Library. Application deadline: Friday April 16, 2010 Midnight. The annual Lipking-Newberry Fellowship is designed to enable a qualified Northwestern graduate student in English to spend a quarter conducting research at the Newberry Library. Full-time residence at the Newberry Library is required. A stipend equivalent to Northwestern's University Fellowship stipend ($5,130 in 2009-10) plus tuition will be provided. Candidates for the Fellowship should supply a Newberry Library Short-Term and Special Awards Cover Sheet, CV, a letter of recommendation, and a description (no more than 500 words) of the research they plan to carry out and its relation to Newberry resources. Decisions about the award will be made by a Newberry committee. In the unlikely event that no English graduate student should qualify, the Fellowship will be opened to other Northwestern departments. Applications should be submitted as email attachments to research@newberry.org, copied to n-mead2@northwestern.edu.
- Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel Fellowship
Application deadline: January 10, 2011 for linked long-term fellowship; March 1, 2010 for linked short-term fellowship
Applicants for long- and short-term fellowships at the Newberry may also ask to be considered for this joint fellowship providing an additional two-month fellowship in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. The proposed project should link the collections of both libraries; applicants should plan to hold both fellowships sequentially to ensure continuity of research. The award will pay 1,050 EUR per month plus up to 600 EUR for travel expenses. For more information on the Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel, see their web page at www.hab.de.
- Frances C. Allen Fellowships

This fellowship is for women of American Indian heritage. While candidates for this award may be working in any graduate or pre-professional field, the particular goal of the Allen Fellowship is to encourage American Indian women in their studies of any field related to the Newberry Library’s collections. Financial support varies according to need and may include travel expenses. Allen fellows are expected to spend a significant part of their tenure in residence at the Newberry's D'Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian History. The tenure of the fellowship is from one month to one year; the fellowship provides up to $8,000 in approved expenses. Please note: applicants for the Allen Fellowship must fill out a supplementary form in addition to the cover sheet for special awards and fellowships.
- Arthur and Lila Weinberg Fellowship for Independent Scholars

The Arthur and Lila Weinberg Fellowship will be awarded to an independent scholar who wishes to participate in the rich and varied scholarly and public programming of the Newberry Library for 9-12 months on a flexible basis to be determined in conversation with Library staff. We seek scholars, writers, filmmakers, and other humanists with careers primarily outside the academy, who wish to use the Library's collections in the creation of a publication or comparable product. Preference is given to scholars working on historical issues related to social justice or reform. Applicants need not be from outside the Chicago area. The successful applicant will receive a total stipend of $1,600.
