Founded in 1983 at Northwestern University, the Newberry Teachers' Consortium's (NTC) original goal was to meet the specific professional development needs of teachers of Advanced Placement courses. In 1998, NTC moved to the Newberry Library, an independent research library concentrating in the humanities with a strong commitment to precollegiate education in the Chicago area, and expanded its offerings to meet the needs of teachers of Advanced Placement, honors, and regular courses..
Organized as a series of intellectually stimulated, content-based seminars, NTC aims to help teachers reconnect with the world of scholarship, rediscover the cultural and scholarly resources in the Chicago area, and reinspire them to model the love of learning for their students.
NTC seminars, which are held on weekdays, consist of three-hours of presentation and discussion, led by distinguished scholars or recognized experts in their fields. Seminars always take place from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, unles otherwise noted.
Selected seminars will also offer a two-hour afternoon session to analyze and discuss primary source documents from the Newberry's collections. NTC participants earn CPDUs for their State of Illinois certification renewal.
