The Newberry Library Undergraduate Seminar

The Newberry Library Undergraduate Seminar (NLUS) brings together a select group of twenty students from DePaul, Loyola, Roosevelt, and UIC to explore a broadly defined topic in the humanities. Courses include common readings and individual research in the Newberry’s extraordinary collections, covering European and American cultures from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Faculty and students are provided with individual work areas at the Newberry, along with access to the Library’s collections and its curators and resident scholars. The course runs from January-May and carries the credit of two courses; the calendar accommodates both semester and quarter schedules.

The class is scheduled for two three-hour sessions per week to enable maximum interaction with Newberry staff and to provide time for group assignments and independent work in the Library's collections. Seminars generally begin with common readings and group meetings and evolve toward individual research projects.
