The Dr. William M. Scholl Center for American History and Culture
The Dr. William M. Scholl Center for American History and Culture, founded in 1971, promotes innovative research and teaching through the use of the Newberry Library’s rich collections in American history, culture, and the humanities. Scholl Center projects develop research, reference, and curriculum materials for scholars, teachers, and the public. Recent projects have included the ongoing Atlas of Historical County Boundaries series and The Encyclopedia of Chicago (University of Chicago Press, 2004), published online in cooperation with the Chicago History Museum. In cooperation with Chicago-area universities, the Center sponsors seminars that bring scholars and students from different institutions together to discuss their ongoing research in a workshop format. From 1971 to 2008, the Center was known as the Dr. William M. Scholl Center for Family and Community History.
All activities of the Scholl Center are supported in part by the Dr. Scholl Foundation.
