CPDU, CEU, IN-SERVICE, or UNIVERSITY CREDITS for NEH CARTOGRAPHY SEMINAR at the NEWBERRY
The NEH is not a degree granting institution, nor is the Newberry Library, therefore college/university credits will not be offered for this seminar. The Seminar is offered to teachers nationwide and we therefore cannot offer credits that are specific to a local school system. However, we do realize that teachers are under growing pressure to document their professional development activities and to meet various re-certification requirements, so we will assist them in those efforts in the three ways outlined below.
1. All participants will receive a general certificate of attendance from the NEH at the conclusion of the Seminar. The certificate, supplied by the NEH and signed by the Seminar Director, states: “Hereby it is certified that _____ (name of participant) has been a participant in the 2005 summer seminars and institutes program, _________ (name of program), ______ (name and location of host institution).” This certificate does not list hours of attendance or hours of participation.
2. If any of the successful applicants are interested in CPDUs from the State of Illinois, we will register the seminar with the state and will provide appropriate documentation to participants on the final day of the seminar. Participants from other states are responsible for finding out if their state accepts Illinois CPDUs and for filing any additional paperwork needed to transfer Illinois credit. Generally, one CPDU is earned for every hour of attendance. We anticipate that “Developing Cartographic Literacy” will offer between 40 and 50 hours, pending final confirmation of the schedule in May. The State of Illinois grants credit only for the number of hours in attendance; individual research time or absences from scheduled sessions will not be counted towards CPDUs.
3. If requested by an individual, the Seminar director will write a letter providing a brief schedule and description of activities and verifying the number of hours that the individual participated (this number will be calculated according to the formula for CPDUs). The letter will not be written until after the conclusion of the seminar.
