Map Societies

Chicago Map Society. Founded in 1976, the Chicago Map Society is the oldest map society in North America. Meetings are held during the academic year at the Newberry Library. The society occasionally arranges excursions to map libraries and often dedicates one meeting a year as a time for members to share their own maps with the group. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in maps.

Washington Map Society. The Washington Map Society was founded in 1979 with a mission to support and promote map collecting, cartography, and cartographic history. The Portolan, the Society's journal, was established to keep members informed of upcoming meetings, exhibitions, seminars and conferences; to provide listings of new books dealing with the history of cartography; and to provide information of specific interests to members. The Walter S. Ristow Prize seeks to recognize achievement in cartographic history and map librarianship and is offered annually by the Society.

Rocky Mountain Map Society. The Rocky Mountain Map Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study and appreciation of maps and other items of cartographic interest. The Society was formed in 1991 and is headquartered in Denver, Colorado.

Texas Map Society. The Texas Map Society (TMS) was organized in November 1996 to foster the study, understanding and collecting of historical maps and the history of cartography. Membership only requires an interest in maps of any nature and any focus. Members support the activities of the society and participate in special events and programs. The Society publishes Neatline.

Organizations

The Society for the History of the Discoveries (SHD) was founded in 1960 to stimulate interest in teaching, research, and publishing the history of geographical exploration. The Society's program of publications includes Terrae Incognitae, a journal of research papers and book reviews published annually since 1969, and five volumes in the series Studies in the History of Discovery, published jointly with the Newberry Library.

International Map Collectors' Society (IMCoS). IMCoS is a non-profit, London-based organization founded in 1980. Members include collectors, dealers, librarians, academics and just plain dabblers; about 70% of memebrship is from outside the UK. In additional to hosting several regular events throughout the year, IMCoS organizes an international symposium - held in a different county each year.

American Association of Geographers. The Association of American Geographers (AAG) is a scientific and educational society founded in 1904. Its members share interests in the theory, methods, and practice of geography and geographic education. The 2006 Annual Meeting will be held in CHICAGO on 7-11 March 2006.

National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE). The National Council for Geographic Education works to enhance the status and quality of geography teaching and learning.
