Stacy Schiff to Receive Newberry Library Award

April 2015

Since the Newberry’s centennial year in 1987, the Newberry Library Award has been awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to fields of study related to the humanities, and specifically areas within the scope of the Newberry’s collections. On May 11, the tradition will continue with the presentation of the Newberry Library Award to Stacy Schiff, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Véra (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov).

Schiff has also published Saint-Exupéry, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America, winner of the George Washington Book Prize, the Ambassador Award in American Studies, and the Gilbert Chinard Prize of the Institut Français d’Amérique. All three books have been named New York Times Notable Books; A Great Improvisation was listed as a Best Book of the Year by the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times Book Review, and The Economist. In 2010, Schiff published Cleopatra: A Life, which appeared on most year-end best books lists, including the New York Times’s Top Ten Books of 2010 and will be translated into 30 languages.

“The core of the Newberry’s mission is to promote knowledge in the humanities, and it is a pleasure to honor scholars who embody that ideal,” said Newberry President David Spadafora. “Ms. Schiff’s historical biographies, rigorously researched and compellingly written, enliven history by taking unexplored pathways into the lives of notable figures.”

Previous recipients of the Newberry Library Award include Roger Baskes, long-time Newberry trustee and former chair of the board; David McCullough, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author; Hanna H. Gray, President Emerita, University of Chicago; Anthony Grafton, Henry Putnam University Professor of History at Princeton University; and Jonathan D. Spence, Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University.

Stacy Schiff will be presented with the 2015 Newberry Library Award by Spadafora and Victoria J. Herget, chair of the Newberry Board of Trustees.
