Thankful (more or less)

It is the time of year to give thanks, and I thought I would list just a few of the things I’m thankful for this November.

1. I work at one of the finest research libraries in the Western Hemisphere, which contains great quantities of aged and esoteric books no one else has room for, should I ever wish to finish up my research about Nostradamus and the bunny rabbits.

2. I work with people who can discourse on epistemology and/or recite all the lyrics from the Bugs Bunny version of the overture to the Barber of Seville.

3. I have a job for which I am peculiarly suited, which is important, as I am suited to virtually nothing else. (My career suitability test in high school suggested I become a cab driver. I did not do this. That’s something YOU should be thankful about.)

4. I get to meet all kinds of people I wouldn’t meet otherwise, AND go through their book collections. (No, I promised I wouldn’t tell anybody about that boxful you sent over with the inflatable cello.)

5. I get to meet all kinds of books I wouldn’t meet otherwise. (Remind me to blog sometime about the lady who enhanced hers with glitter.)

6. I get to take these books and pass them along to other people who will treasure them, and these people give me money for the library mentioned in number 1 so it can pay the people mentioned in number 2 (and, incidentally, number 3, so I can continue with 4, 5, and 6.)

My thanks to you, too. If you’re reading this blog, you’re probably involved in at least one of the preceding six.  (And don’t spend all that money on cranberry gel that you should be saving to buy copies of I Was a Teenage Norwegian next July.)
