Ways to Give
Your gift makes a difference
Since 1887, the Newberry has been shaped and strengthened through the generosity of our donors, including our founding benefactor Walter L. Newberry and the thousands of individuals, organizations, foundations, and corporate partners who have sustained his vision of a library open to the public without charge. Contributions to the Newberry ensure our ability to build, preserve, and share the collection with visitors today and for generations to come. Gifts to the Annual Fund of $50 or more qualify for membership in the Newberry Associates or President’s Fellows. We also welcome contributions to support specific endeavors, including:
- Public programs
- Programs for scholars and students, including those organized by our research centers
- Collection processing, cataloging, and conservation projects
- Programs for teachers
- Book funds
You are welcome to contact the Development Office directly for more information about giving opportunities. The Newberry is a 501(c)(3) organization, and your gift is tax deductible to the extent provided by law. Thank you for your interest and support!
In addition, the Newberry is grateful for the many volunteers who contribute their time and skills to the library to further our mission. Learn more about our volunteering opportunities, including the Newberry Book Fair.

Individual Retirement Accounts
If you are age 70½ or older, you can make a gift by directing up to $100,000 from your IRAs to the Newberry without having to count the distribution as income for tax purposes. You can also make the Newberry a beneficiary of your IRAs as part of your estate plan.
Here are some key details about giving from your IRAs:
- Donors age 70½ and older can make charitable gifts from their traditional and ROTH IRAs at any time
- Gifts must be transmitted directly from the IRA custodian to the Newberry
- The total of all gifts can be no more than $100,000 per year
- Gift amounts must meet the mandatory distribution requirement from IRAs
- Gift distributions from IRAs are excluded from your taxable income and are not limited to a percentage of adjusted gross income
Books and other materials
The Newberry welcomes donations of books, music, videos, and other collectibles for the annual Book Fair, all proceeds from which benefit the library. Please visit our guide to Book Fair donations for more information. If you are considering a gift of materials to the Newberry’s collection, please contact our selectors or email email@example.com. Individuals interested in supporting acquisitions at the Newberry are encouraged to learn more about the Society of Collectors.
If you would like to make a gift to the Newberry in honor or in memory of someone, please include this information with your gift. We would be happy to send notification of the tribute to the honoree or a surviving family member or friend to the mailing address you provide. Our online donation form includes a section where this information can be included, if applicable. Tribute gift donors and recipients are listed in the Tribute section of our Annual Report.
Many companies match the charitable contributions of their employees and retirees. Arranging for a matching gift is an excellent way to extend your contribution! Please contact your company’s human resources department for more information about eligibility.
Stock and appreciated assets
Using stock or other financial securities to make a gift can provide you with significant tax benefits. If you have any questions, please call (312) 255-3581 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Arranging for a gift to the Newberry through your estate is a wonderful way to support the library’s mission to build, preserve, and share our world-renowned collection.
