Le Roman de la Rose: Literary and Codicological Perspectives
Sylvia Huot, Northern Illinois University (now at the University of Cambridge)
Students read the Roman de la Rose in its entirety, and session were divided between discussions of the text and examinations of the manuscript tradition. Diverse approaches were used, focusingon such topics as the reception of classical mythology; the elaboration of a love psychology; the construction of gender; and the interplay between erotic, rational, and sacred discourses. Discussions of the manuscript tradition included such topics as textual abridgements and interpolations, rubrication and glossing of the text, and manuscript illumination.
