Mention the 1960s and a handful of places come to mind: Dallas, Selma, San Francisco, Saigon. This seminar will add another place to the list, exploring the key dynamics of that iconic decade as they played out in the nation’s Second City. We’ll move from Lawndale to the Loop, Marquette Park to Grant Park, the Gold Coast to the bungalow belt to see how politicians, activists, and ordinary Chicagoans grappled with racial conflict, sweeping social change, and questions of war and peace. And we’ll spend a little time wondering whether the ’60s might have looked decidedly different, depending on where you were as the decade’s great dramas unfolded.
