This seminar cultivates strategies for teaching F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby in relation to its film adaptations, privileging the 1974 and 2013 versions. First, we will discuss prompts students can answer during their reading or before a screening, facilitating richer responses to the movies’ images, sounds, and scene structures. Next, we will practice activities for teaching the basics of formal film analysis and of cinematic adaptation. These exercises encompass passages from lesser-known Fitzgerald texts as well as prose by his contemporaries, so they additionally challenge students to contemplate modernist themes and styles in and beyond Gatsby. We will end by examining key scenes from the Gatsby films in close detail.
