Irving’s Medium
Christopher J. Lukasik, Purdue University
Professor Lukasik’s paper comes from his new book project entitled The Image in the Text: Intermediality, Illustration, and Nineteenth-Century American Literature. His paper will use the intermedial references found within and the subsequent media combinations generated by Washington Irving’s The Sketch Book (1819-20) as the occasion to discuss the role of images in literary history and the role of literature in the rise of mass optical media such as illustration.
Scholl Center Seminar papers are pre-circulated electronically. For a copy of the paper, email the Scholl Center at scholl@newberry.org. Please do not request a paper unless you plan to attend.
