Native American Fiction and Film

Tuesday, February 23, 2010
Programs for Teachers
Newberry Teachers' Consortium

This seminar is meant to provide participants with an overview of Native American literature through a series of short readings and the discussion of the Native American film, “Smoke Signals.”  The readings have been chosen for their accessibility and for the fact that they represent some key themes that one encounters in Native American literature.  Such themes include the challenges in living between the worlds of a traditional Indian culture and the world of the majority culture outside of the reservation. Participants will examine strategies for seeing Native American literature within the broad context of American literature. A variety of secondary resources and web sites will be recommended to help students explore Native literary traditions on their own.

Seminar led by Scott Manning Stevens, Newberry Library
