9:30 am to 12:30 pm
This seminar has been rescheduled. Please note the new date above.
From Lady Macbeth to Ophelia to Desdemona to Cleopatra, Shakespeare’s female characters have become useful shorthand for exploring highly recognized, highly charged images of femininity in the contemporary moment. This seminar will use film as a tool for teaching and writing about gender, sexuality, race, pleasure and power in Shakespeare’s plays, as well as in our own cultural context. Films discussed will include Franco Zefferelli’s Taming of the Shrew, Gil Junger’s Ten Things I Hate About You, Billy Morrisette’s Scotland, PA, Tim Blake Nelson’s O, Julie Taymor’s Titus and Tempest, and Michael Almereyda’s Hamlet.
Registration for all Newberry Teachers’ Consortium seminars opens September 4, 2014.
