Center for Renaissance Studies Programs
Graduate Seminar
Sanctity and Socity in the Medieval West
Thomas Head, Washington University
currently teaching at the City University of New York
This course served as an introduction to medieval hagiography, the literature which recorded the lives of saints in Christendom. The seminar introduced students to hagiographic literature, as well as to the research tools which aid in the use and control of hagiographic sources. Through the study of hagiography, the seminar explored various facets of the cult of saints in medieval society and the work of scholars in a variety of disciplines (social history, art history, history of spirituality and literature) which is based on hagiography.
