For the Fall 2021 term, we’re offering a mix of virtual and in-person classes. Although we are still primarily virtual, you will find a smaller selection of in-person seminars in the schedule. For more information about the Newberry’s virtual seminars, including a Zoom tutorial, please see our Virtual Seminars FAQ page. Registration opens on September 1st at 9am (Central time). Registration will take place through our online platform, Learning Stream.
This seminar takes you on a four-part 40-year journey through the various spaces that make up the Chicago’s musical history. Revisit forgotten jazz joints such as the Tic-To Club, Friar’s Inn, Club DeLisa, and even the Sherman Hotel’s sophisticated Panther Room to learn how Ragtime, the Blues, and Gospel all came together to create Chicago Jazz. In addition to archival recordings, live performance, and lectures, each session puts you “In the Mood” (apologies to Glenn Miller) by sharing a recipe for a period-appropriate cocktail made by an expert mixologist. The first three sessions of this seminar are going to be virtual. The final session is going to be virtual but can also be attended in-person.
Four sessions. Registration – $120
