Founded by the Romans in the mid-first century, during the Middle Ages London became one of Europe’s largest cities and a prominent center of trade. This seminar will survey the Roman foundations of the city and its evolution during the first 1500 years of its history. We will study the principal architectural monuments of the Roman and medieval periods, as well as key events in the city’s history, including the Norman Conquest and the Black Death.
