Seminar Description

Charlotte Brontë's story of a poor, plain, disconnected governess valiantly making her way in the world has captured the imaginations of scores of writers, artists, and producers who have adapted her novel for a wide range of media, including ballet, radio, film, theatre, and television. In this six-session seminar, we will explore the fascinating history of Jane Eyre in adaptation, charting its development in relation to cultural shifts (e.g., feminism and postcolonial theory), literary trends, and new technologies.

Six sessions. Registration – $230

Amber Pouliot holds a PhD in Victorian literature from the University of Leeds. Her work on the Brontës' writing and afterlives has been published in Brontë Studies, The Journal of Victorian Culture, and Nineteenth-Century Contexts.
