Seminar Description

Experience the world of late 19th-century Paris through the paintings of the Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte, artist of the renowned Paris Street, Rainy Day. Though not as widely known as some of his peers, Caillebotte nevertheless forged a modernist style steeped in both tradition and experimentation.

This seminar will explore his pivotal artworks by considering his relationship to the newly modernized cityscape, along with an analysis of concomitant developments in art criticism and Realist literature promoting ardent engagement with the contemporary world.

Margaret Farr is an independent art historian with a PhD in art history, specializing in art from 1800 to the present. In addition to teaching classes, she is an adjunct lecturer at the Art Institute of Chicago.
