Seminar Description

Is writing poetry as a female an inherently political act? Can protest be staged on a page? How are women’s written voices amplified or not, heard or not, validated or not, published or not--and what fresh urgencies might accompany these questions now, after the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment? We will consider themes of space and constriction; embodiment and [re]presentation; authority and the arbitration of “taste.” Our focus is on texts--particularly poetic texts and texts on writing--and select images.

Four sessions. Registration – $120

C. Mitchell holds an MFA in poetry from Boston University, where she taught creative writing, and an MA in religion and literature from the University of Chicago, where she currently teaches composition.
