Seminar Description

A survey of writers and literary critics conducted by the NYT found Beloved the best work of American fiction of the past 35 years. An enthralling and shocking work of historical fiction based on a true story, Beloved portrays a woman’s escape with her children from slavery – and the aftermath. We will read and discuss the complex novel, understanding the historical, social, and cultural climate of the times. We will also discuss the literary techniques Toni Morrison uses to explore such themes as mother love and self-love, the trauma of slavery, and its effects on survivors..

Six sessions. Registration – $230/$207
