Seminar Description

This course will examine stories from the Bible and the Qur’an regarding the two holy figures of Jesus (The Prophet Issa) and the Virgin Mary (Our Lady Maryam). We will aim to find out how they have been portrayed similarly or differently throughout the histories of these two religions. We will look at paintings, manuscripts and talismans that display images and icons of the Virgin Mary and Jesus from the Islamicate world, listen to songs and speeches invoking these two figures and ponder the significance of pilgrimage to holy sites sacred to both Catholicism and Islam, like the shrine to the Virgin Mary in Ephesus, Turkey.

Two sessions. Registration – $170/$153

Ms. Harig-Khan teaches the arts, politics, culture and history of the Levant. She studied anthropology and Islamic Studies at the University of Chicago and the American University of Beirut. She also studied Arabic literature at SOAS in London. She has been teaching at the Newberry since 2018.
