One of the 1897 portraits of Geronimo by painter E.A. Burbank. Burbank was relieved when Geronimo agreed to pose in his “correct costume.” Geronimo, however, resisted Burbank’s request that he wear war paint. Far from a passive subject, the Chiricahua Apache leader appears to have leveraged his relationship with Burbank as part of a larger effort to control his public image.
