Join a Newberry Book Group

Newberry Associates at the Authors level and above, President’s Fellows, and Next Chapter members are eligible to join one of four Newberry Book Groups. Each group is member-led. Books are selected by group members. Information on upcoming meetings can be found on the Events for Donors page.

Afternoon Book Group
This group meets eight times per year (September through November; January through May) at the Newberry* on the third Thursday of the month from 11:45 am until 1 pm. This group recently read In the Distance by Hernan Diaz, Beloved by Toni Morrison, The Overstory by Richard Powers, and Pachinko by Min Jin Lee.

Evening Book Group
This group meets nine times per year (September through November; January through June) at the Newberry* on the third Thursday of the month from 5:45 until 7 pm. This group recently read There There by Tommy Orange, Machines Like Me by Ian McEwan, The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, and Trust Exercise by Susan Choi.

Virtual Book Group (NEW)
This group meets meets nine times per year (September through November; January through June) on the second Wednesday of each month from 5:45 to 7 pm via Zoom. This is the perfect option for members who live outside of Chicago or are unable to visit the Newberry regularly. This group will read A Burning by Megha Majumdar, The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by Erik Larson, Fast Girls: A Novel of the 1936 Women’s Olympic Team by Elise Hooper, and others in 2021.

Next Chapter Book Group (NEW)
This group is for members of Next Chapter, the Newberry’s young professionals donor society. This group meets meets nine times per year (September through November; January through June) on the third Tuesday of each month from 5:45 to 7 pm. This group will read Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Black Buck by Mateo Askaripour, Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell, and others in 2021.

* To aid Chicago’s efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, the Newberry is currently not hosting any on-site meetings or programs. All Book Groups will meet virtually via Zoom until further notice.
