Seminar Description

This year marks the bicentennial of the composition of John Keats’s greatest poems. From the Gothic tale of The Eve of St. Agnes, written in the winter, to the great odes composed during the spring, the year 1819 saw Keats creating many of the poems that established him as a major poetic figure. In this seminar, we will discuss a selection of Keats’s 1819 poems, as well as some key Keatsian concepts and ideas, such as the “vale of soul-making” and “negative capability.”

Colleen English holds a PhD in Irish and British Romantic literature from University College Dublin and has taught a wide variety of literature courses. She currently teaches writing courses at Loyola University Chicago and is co-convening the Irish Studies Scholarly Seminar at the Newberry.
