Getting a Reader's Card
It all starts with a reader's card. If you're 14 or older and have a research interest related to our collection, you can sign up for one. When you visit the Newberry for the first time, you’ll complete your registration by obtaining a reader’s card in our Welcome Center on the first floor. To receive your reader’s card, you’ll need a valid photo ID and proof of current home address.
To create a reader account onsite, please visit us Tuesday through Saturday, during reading room Hours, in the Herget Welcome Center on the first floor. There is no fee for a reader’s card, or for use of the library generally, although researchers do pay for photoduplication services.
Your reader’s card is linked to your online reader’s account, which you can use to request items from the Newberry collection. You’re welcome to submit requests ahead of time or upon your arrival at the Newberry.
