A Taste of Faulkner

Take an unforgettable literary trip to William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County. Meet the Compsons, Sutpens, and dozens of other utterly unique characters who dwell there, and encounter the complex relationships that slavery left in its wake.

Seminar Description

Take an unforgettable literary trip to William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County. Meet Colonel Sartoris, Quentin Compson, Dilsey Gibson, Dewey Dell Bunden, and dozens of other spectacular characters who dwell there, and explore slavery's role in shaping the South. You will return from this journey with a deeper understanding of the South and an appreciation of Faulkner's skill in bringing his fictional world to life. In this seminar, we will read As I Lay Dying as well as short stories and selections from The Portable Faulkner.

Six sessions. Registration – $230

Richard Reeder is a fiction and non-fiction author. He moderates the Cliff Dwellers long-standing book club and writes a popular literary blog.

Bob Boone is a teacher and writer. He has written both fiction and non-fiction books and is the founder of Young Chicago Authors.

  • The Portable Faulkner by William Faulkner and edited by Malcolm Cowley. Penguin Classics, 2003. ISBN: 978-0142437285.

  • As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. Vintage International, 1990. ISBN: 067973225X.

First Reading:

  • For the first session, please read the book's introduction and the stories "A Rose for Emily' and "Dilsey.”
