Seminar Description

Beginning in 1900, the United States underwent a period of unprecedented social and technological change that would herald broad transformations in American society through the first half of the century. This course explores how American artists responded to explosive urban growth, industrial expansion, the Great Migration, the Depression, and the coming of European modernism. Join us as we examine the works of Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Grant Wood, Archibald J. Motley, Jr., and many more.

Margaret Farr is an independent art historian with a PhD specializing in art from 1800 to the present. She teaches courses at the Newberry Library and the Center for Life and Learning, and is an adjunct lecturer at the Art Institute of Chicago.
