Class Description

In this one-day class, Armenian genealogy for those without access to Turkish resources will be explored. A challenging topic, attendees will learn how to leverage basic genealogical records to come to complex conclusions about their ancestors. They will gain a better understanding of how to decipher Armenian language publications, use outside databases and repositories, geographic and demographic reconstructions, and come to a better contextual understanding of the history and society of the Ottoman Empire at the time of the Armenian Genocide. By the end of this course, it is hoped that attendees will not only leave motivated to learn more about their Armenian heritage, but also, to explore those resources that will reveal their history. Non-Armenians may also find this course a valuable case study for navigating hidden archives.

All virtual classes are recorded and made available to participants registered in the class. These recordings are password-protected and available for up to two weeks after the class ends.

Claire Gene Esker is a professional genealogist, owner of Past Forward Family History in Highwood. She specializes in Polish genealogy, and is a member of the boards of the Polish Genealogical Society of America and the Illinois State Genealogical Society.
