The Art of Memory: Everyday Life During the Pandemic

—David Bernie and Dutes & Shellabarger

How did artists respond to the sudden and drastic changes in everyday life precipitated by COVID-19 in the early weeks and months of the pandemic?

This program will be held in-person at the Newberry and livestreamed on Zoom. The online version of this event will be live captioned. Please register below.

Join artists David Bernie, Dutes Miller, and Stan Shellabarger, as they explore in retrospect the ways they adapted their lives and work in response to the isolation and shifts in daily routine brought about in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The discussion will feature illustrations from a range of posters and artists’ books recently acquired by the Newberry that were created by artists during that time.

This program is generously supported by Art Design Chicago.

David Bernie, Ihanktonwan Dakota Oyate, People of the End Village, is a Chicago artist who uses historical and current events within his artwork to create dialogue across communities. The subject of his work is predominantly social and economic inequality, both within Indian Country and worldwide. He is driven to comprehend the roots of inequality while inspiring discussion and action. He is creator of the “World News” poster project which riffs on current issues and news stories.

Miller & Shellabarger is an artistic collaboration between married artists Dutes Miller and Stan Shellabarger. The duo works across media, from traditional American craft techniques and photography to performance art installations. Their works have won a 2008 Artadia Award and a 2007 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation award. Their recent artist book Coffee Book 1/25/20 – 8/30/20 records the early months of the pandemic through coffee stains.
