Class Description

During the 1920s and 1930s, in response to political instability, economic dislocation, and perceived national humiliation, authoritarian governments of various types emerged in Europe, including Italian Fascism, German Nazism, populist nationalist regimes, and military dictatorships. Strongman leaders exercised charismatic authority, emphasizing grievances against established elites, the imperative of national renewal, subservience to a single political party, and aggressive militarism. Explore this historical phenomenon in the context of its contemporary relevance.

Frank Biletz received his PhD in history from the University of Chicago, with a primary specialization in modern British and Irish history. He is currently Adjunct Instructor in History at Loyola University Chicago and has been teaching seminars at the Newberry since 1994.
